HOW TYPHOONS FORM A typhoon forms when winds blow into areas of the ocean where the water is warm. These winds collect moisture and rise, while colder air moves in beneath them. This difference in temperature creates pressure, which causes the winds to move rapidly. As the system intensifies, the winds begin to rotate or spin around a calm center known as the eye.
