New Foal— The area is very rocky with all kinds of volcanic terrain including ledges, and the mare (we believe in the Indigo band), with her hours-old foal had to pick her way through the rock and rubble, finding the best way among the rock ledges for her baby. Very rough and the rock ledges are difficult to see from where we were standing, but we’ve walked it and it’s not easy to navigate… even these new-newbies are mustang tough! They would go anywhere to stay close to their mothers. It was th

Roamed 2 miles across sage and lavarock to a waterhole 2 miles north of camp. As we crested the hill and looked down into the draw we found Solomon trailing the indigo band. There is a brand new baby born that day there as well. #wildlife #wildhorses #mustangs #mustanglife #mustangsociety #canon #MustangMeg #keepourwestwild #wildlifephotography | Mustang Meg

We sure know how to “clear a room” lol. 9 mile roundtrip from camp making our way to a waterhole south of us. Stealthed to distant specks of mustangs- backcountry wild horses, though semi-familiar with two-leggeds- not the “Hollywoods” but not the extreme wildies. We came across several bands, horses including Echelon, Fleet, and Sundown among others. #wildhorses #mustangs #mustangsociety #MustangMeg #wildlife #wildlifephotography #canon #keepthewildinourwest #keepthewestwild #wildwest #roaming

Chrome stirring things up— he didn’t rest that whole day. He was released to the range and was on this hilltop where the bands were congregating and he felt he had much to prove. He was taking on any stallion that looked his way… reminding all the stallions his place on the hierarchy totem. No trip is the same each unique and each wonderful in its own way. Just some moments on the range - starting with breakfast in the truckbed on a very cold windy day. Then taking a break hiking with a snack and a bunch of studs running in during a dust storm! You’ll even see my MustangWild travel mug with some early morning Mustang Mud! 😎No rain, sleet or snow, heat, or wild winds can keep us from roaming … come meander those mustang trails with us- a day compressed in a few minutes.. go MustagW

A little gifty for you guys. A quick unedited clip of a moment on the range with some very wild little known or seen mustangs- if at all. Just sitting among the sage watching several bands and these bachelors came in briefly, and then pranced on by. Turn up the sound to hear the songbirds too. This is a sample for the upcoming full video on my channel www.youtube.com/mustangmeg .. come follow along w me on those mustang trails! | Mustang Meg

Shaman of the South Steens. The wild mustang stallion that I receive the most questions about- Shaman. I’ve missed seeing him the last several trips, (the last time I saw him was early last year by the waterhole. Had to hike out to him in the heat, but very worth it- especially when he saw us and came trotting in closer, covering some of the distance. Keep the WILD in our WEST! The Shaman— thought you guys might enjoy moments of Shaman. This recent trip we did not see him, but he was spotted a day or so after we left and he looks good. So I’m sipping on coffee, before delving into more moments of this April trip, and while I’m waiting for the caffeine to awaken my brainwaves— re-sharing Shaman moments of last year. Enjoy, and always-ALWAYS be MustangWild! Keep the *WILD* in our WEST - Mustang Meg #wildhorses #wildlifephotography #wildanimals #canonphotography #mustangs

To go with the image I shared yesterday of Chrome, he was a returned stallion after the fall roundup, and he’s trying to rebuild his own band on this twisting and turning life journey. He took a liking to the young palo lady with the Aztec boys (we think she is relatively new to them). Both young and inexperienced stallions, but Chrome is a seasoned band stallion (though he lost his band in the recent gather). The larger pinto boy comes and goes we noticed during this trip, but the one that is w

Moments of May. I had a few hours with the horses while Rick was training at the higher elevations for his upcoming mountain bike race. It was great to see the two Aztec brothers still together and still w the mare they had in April. Chrome, who had been after that same mare, seemed less interested, which makes me think she is settled/in foal, so he lost interest. Happy to see Benson who had been captured and returned. Before the gather he and FourSocks had one of the bigger bands on the Steens

Headed Out— first trip of the year to see what we could see. We weren’t sure what we would find, if we would find much of anything. Last we were out here was in October. This first part of our trip we saw the bachelor band we saw back then with the Aztec brothers, along with a handsome dun stallion(I had referred to him as a buckskin, but noticed a dark dorsal stripe on his back so he is actually a dun.). Good to see the bachelor band still together since after the gather of last August. But, rh

Whitetail—. It was so cute, Whitetail got rather excited because a nearby mare nickered. Of course he thought it was directed to him, and answered back enthusiastically. Of course her stallion was right between, and Whitetail kept a respectful distance. The bay stallion that got the foal up was endearing to watch, bc he really spent time him looking the foal over, taking in the scent- learning/memorizing.. When the foal finally woke up from deep sleep and went to mother, its fam called in respon

Video: May trip, first full day. Condensed the day into about 5 minutes. On this day we discovered that RedVogue was no longer with his band and choosing to be on his own. Hawkeye, his Lieutenant since 2013, has taken over much of the band, while a robust dun, who we believe is El Capitan (Granite’s boy) has Saige and her offspring. 18 yr old Shaman is doing well, keeping company with a bay bachelor and stirring things up - testing other stallions. Great day, good weather, forage and water good,

It is my good friend, Donna‘s birthday today, and wanted to share a video of one of her trips out here to visit me in Oregon. I put the short video together for her birthday and also wanted to share this special moment with you all. She had named Firefly back in 2019 when he was a newbie, and surprise!- a few years later, got to see him as a grown-up bachelor. These days she and husband Randy have made possible for friend and trainer Lydia, to adopt Firefly after 2022 capture… but there’s more-

Very happy to see Mahogany again, he’s 10 now. In the fall of 2014 we discovered him as an orphan in the SilverBay/Bigblack band. A solitary colt among the large band lead by two stallions- we watched him rejected by all the mares when we all realized he was an orphan. The only one not rejecting him was stallion BigBlack. Mahogany stood next to him and watched us from the safety of the black stallion. By 2022 he won mare Sunshine, her 2021 colt Pinyon, and 2022 colt Moonshine from stallion Audac

Sundown band— we hiked about 9 miles the first half of the day- 4 1/2 miles out and 4 1/2 miles back. The last half was all sustained uphill over rough country in the heat of the day, studded with lava rock all directions with no reprieve. Being on the side of a mountain, the sun at that elevation was searing hot. Even so, we set out and hiked cross-country to a waterhole which was about 3 miles south of camp as the crow flies, but by the time we veered off and caught up with other bands, it too

The Black Mare This most recent trip Alice and I were headed to the Steens outback in search of Voodoo. We did not see the black stallion, but we saw other wildies. Usually horses out here flee from two-leggeds. While other bands vacated, this band stuck around long enough for some frames. They ended up being very curious about us especially a cute little white-faced sorrel, and a beautiful black mare. Being in Voodoos territory, I couldn’t help, but wonder if she was somehow related to the lege

Bentley Band— dropped Rick and his mountain bike off at around the 5600 foot level for training for an upcoming race at the higher elevations. While I waited for him for a few hours, I went out looking for mustangs that we had passed heading up the mountain and whatever else I could find. Heading down the mountain, It was nice to see the Bentley band right off the road. Bc I was Rick’s on-call and pickupman, I wasn’t able to to venture too far off the loop road, so it was nice to find a band nea

A friend of mine, who traveled out there with me in 2018 saw and fell in love with the pinto who was a mere few days old at the time. So I offered that she think of a name that would go along with the theme of his dam’s- HalfMoon, and she chose Firefly. This trip was the first time she saw him grown up running w a bachelor band. It was a pretty special moment. Facebook suggested that I turn my video into a short real so this is an abbreviated version, but I do have the full video (click on the v
