Fridays work on the 1938 MAN 8 cylinder engine. In between videoing the RR Wankel engine we managed to do a bit of work on the MAN! After the video was taken the leaks on the pipework were rectified we filled the pipework with diesel flushed out the pipework and fitted the 8 connecting pipes between the manifold and the fuel pumps. | Anson Engine Museum

Tightening the heads down “evenly” on the 1938 MAN engine. When the two heads, liners and the joint rings are all cleaned up annealed this is how we’re going to stress the heads down evenly! This is 1-5 reduction torque multiplier at Mirrlees we used 1-125 reduction boxes to stress down cylinder heads and other high torque fasteners. Then hydraulic jacks were used to stretch the fastners, 6 at a time but more of that another time! | Anson Engine Museum

Fridays goings on. The 1938 MAN engine. Now the last two of the four heads have been stressed down and before we fit the air and exhaust push rod assemblies there’s a bit of “mucky” work to be done! The camshaft runs in its own oil bath that appears to of never been cleaned out so today we made a start on removing all the sludge. In the summer some contaminated ( dirty) fuel oil was poured in and sterred up hoping it would thin down the sludge, it was then drained off but some sludge remained. W

The 1938 MAN engine. Last Friday we removed all the rockers, the air and exhaust fasteners etc in preparation for the removal of the last two blowing cylinder heads No 2 3. Prior to releasing the cylinder head nuts this morning we set up two DTI ( dial test indicators) to see if we could see the amount the heads where “cocked” over due to the lifters being fitted to lift the engine from its last insulation in the German brewery! A little catch up first for our new Anson “fans” When we ran the engine for the first time we had a number of head to liner joint rings “blowing” So today it was investigation time. The day started off with some progress after freeing off the two stuck air start timed valve assemblies last week it was time to refit the “8” actuating piston assemblies to the cylinder heads, these depress the air start valves in the cylinder heads to start the engine. We then after a what next discussion we decide to go for it a put some oil in the sump! So the 45 gallon drum of new oil ( we’re not sure what the oil is but it looks like 30’s and it’s in a unmarked green drum

After Tuesday’s disappoint of trying to start the 1938 MAN engine, mainly because we couldn’t turn the engine over fast enough with the available compressed air at 200psi, we thought we’d try a bit of experimenting!
